Amethyst Mine Tour on Electric Fatbike

Exciting and unique activity in Luosto, Lapland. Ride to the top of the Lampivaara fell and dig for your very own lucky Lappish gem! No active cycling background required.

3 hours EASY

Amethyst Mine is open Monday to Saturday until mid-April, with one guided fatbike departure each morning. Small groups ensure a personal and unhurried experience.

Your journey begins on an electrically assisted fatbike as your Bliss guide leads you through the pristine landscapes of Pyhä-Luosto National Park and up to the summit of Lampivaara Fell — home to the Amethyst Mine. As you climb higher and the forest gives way to open views, the Arctic wilderness unfolds around you in every direction.

At the summit, inside a traditional wooden shelter, you’ll hear the remarkable story of the amethyst — formed nearly two billion years ago deep within ancient mountain ranges. Today, this rare deposit rests high above the surrounding landscape, offering a truly uncommon opportunity: to explore a working gemstone mine and search for your own amethyst.

The mine operates gently and responsibly, without the use of heavy machinery. The amethyst is not extracted on an industrial scale, allowing visitors to search for their own stones. Rather than being sold as raw bulk material, the amethyst found here is refined locally into jewellery, meaningful design pieces and carefully crafted experiences.

Then it’s your turn.

In the covered digging area — accessible even in winter — you’ll search for your own personal lucky amethyst. And when you uncover it, you’re holding something that began forming long before human history.

Before descending, you’ll have time to visit the small on-site Amethyst Shop, where beautifully crafted pieces carry the story of Lampivaara forward.

What do i need to bring?

Suitable personal clothing for winter weather including warm boots and gloves or mittens. Please also bring a balaclava or a simple woolen hat without bobble / pompom that will fit under cycling helmet.

Please note

Minimum height of 155 cm for the smallest electric fatbike (size S).

In good snow conditions, physical difficulty level for the electric fatbike tour is regarded as "Easy". However, do not expect the e-fatbike tour to the mine to be like a snowmobile ride (i.e. no physical effort of any level involved). Especially after heavy snowfall during the previous night, "Moderate" pedalling and some basic body coordination will come necessary. Occasionally, you might also need to push the bike to get past the steepest parts, if the snow is very soft.

From Rovaniemi, the closest airport and Santa Claus’ headquarters, it takes 1,5 hours by car or by Skibus to reach us in Luosto (Lapland Hotel Luostotunturi).

For peace of mind, we recommend checking in advance that your travel insurance covers your chosen activity.

Kindly note that 10% of the price of your tour is non-refundable. The 10% will be used to cover fees connected to your booking such as credit card transactions and other administrative charges. Refunds will only be issued to the card used to purchase the tour.
